If it is a scam, there will likely be an abundance of search results, often on the first page of the search, that clearly point out the scammer. There are many websites where people report scammers. You can also do an Internet search for the phone number or business name that is listed in the pop-up to verify its legitimacy. Pop-upsĮxamine the message closely - look for obvious signs which might indicate fraud or deception, such as poor spelling and bad grammar, unprofessional imagery, and language that creates a sense of urgency. How to identify and avoid pop-up and cold-calling tech support scams The common motives behind these tech support scams are to extort the victim to gain money as well as installing malware such as keyloggers or backdoor Trojans in order to gain access to personal information. Software from third-party sites may have been modified to support scam malware and other threats. When you download software, make sure it's only from official vendor websites or the Microsoft Store. Visit Microsoft’s official website and follow prompts to get help if you're having device problems and to report scams. In fact, communication always has to be initiated by you. Microsoft also never includes phone numbers on its error and warning messages. Microsoft doesn't initiate contact via phone or email messages to fix your computer issues. If someone claiming to be a representative calls you, hang up. With both scams, the goal is to get you to pay, in the form of a one-time fee or subscription, to fix the problem. Or, the scammer may initiate contact by displaying fake pop-up messages on your screen that trick you into calling a fraudulent ‘support’ hotline. The scammer will walk you through the process of installing applications that allow remote access to your computer. With the Microsoft tech support scam, a fake representative will call you, even spoofing the caller ID so it looks like the phone call really is coming from the software giant. Scammers like to take advantage of name recognition, pretending to represent well-known software companies such Microsoft or Apple. Here’s an example of how a scam might unfold. Advertising, paid search, confusing search resultsįraudulent companies frequently use paid search to advertise their support services. Tech support scammers can have many tricks up their sleeves. Often, these pop-ups will look like they come from a legitimate source, including some claiming to be related to Norton products. The pop-ups will then display a message stating that the computer is infected with malware and offer a phone number for help with removing the malware. These pop-ups can be terribly intrusive, making it difficult for the user to close the window. Usually, the target is viewing a website that contains links to related content and, when the user clicks on one of those links, it will redirect them to a website hosting the pop-ups. Tech support pop-up warnings occur when a user is browsing the Internet. That’s one way they can steal financial information. In addition to attempting to install malware on the target’s machine, these scammers will often ask for a fee via cryptocurrency or credit card to fix the issue. It can be difficult to stop scammers with security software once you grant remote access. This would allow the attacker access to the target’s computer in order to install real malware. The scammer will then try to get the user to install a type of remote access desktop software under the pretext of helping to remove the infestation. Technical support scammer cold calls are when an individual calls the target, claiming to be from tech support at a reputable company and stating they have found malware on the target’s computer.

Instead of downloading the Booksmart software instead I downloaded the new Bookwright software instead. I logged onto the Blurb site and clicked on the download software button without giving it much thought. This is a pain but it was the last thing I could do (Blurb have still not answered my question to their support system so goodness only knows what they might have suggested if I had rung them). Eventually after trying everything else I decided to delete the software and reinstall. I use their Booksmart software to create the book but for reasons best known to itself the software just wouldn’t upload the book to Blurb. For the past week or so I have been trying to publish my latest year book imaginatively named 2015 with Blurb. Antonio glanced at Felix, who kept his eyes purposely straight ahead, pausing from time to time to do some fancy leg work while throwing one-twos followed by uppercuts to an imaginary jaw. They fooled around with a few jabs at the air, slapped skin, and then took off, running lightly along the dirty East River’s edge. One morning less than a week before their bout, they met as usual for their daily workout. But even when joking with each other, they both sensed a wall rising between them. The two boys continued to run together along the East River Drive. Now, after a series of elimination bouts, they had been informed that they were to meet each other in the division finals that were scheduled for the seventh of August, two weeks away- the winner to represent the Boys’ Club in the Golden Gloves Championship Tournament. Whenever they had met in the ring for sparring sessions,2 it had always been hot and heavy. Antonio’s lean form and long reach made him the better boxer, while Felix’s short and muscular frame made him the better slugger. If asked a question about any given fighter, they would immediately zip out from their memory banks divisions, weights, records of fights, knockouts, technical knockouts, and draws or losses.Įach had fought many bouts representing their community and had won two gold-plated medals plus a silver and bronze medallion. Between them, they had a collection of Fight magazines second to none, plus a scrapbook filled with torn tickets to every boxing match they had ever attended, and some clippings of their own. While some youngsters were into street negatives, Antonio and Felix slept, ate, rapped, and dreamed positive. Early morning sunrises would find them running along the East River Drive, wrapped in sweat shirts, short towels around their necks, and handkerchiefs Apache style around their foreheads. Every chance they had, the boys worked out, sometimes at the Boys’ Club on 10th Street and Avenue A and sometimes at the pro’s gym on 14th Street. Each youngster had a dream of someday becoming lightweight champion of the world. Antonio’s hair was always falling over his eyes, while Felix wore his black hair in a natural Afro style. Antonio was fair, lean, and lanky, while Felix was dark, short, and husky. They had known each other since childhood, growing up on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in the same tenement building on Fifth Street between Avenue A and Avenue B. They were so together in friendship that they felt themselves to be brothers. The story is an inspiring and heartwarming reminder of the power of friendship and human bonding.Antonio Cruz and Felix Vargas were both seventeen years old. It also highlights the importance of sportsmanship, respect, and camaraderie in any competitive setting, whether in sports or in other areas of life. Overall, "Amigo Brothers" is a story about the importance of maintaining strong friendships and bonds with others, even in the face of competition and personal ambition. The crowd watches in awe as the two boxers embrace and walk away arm in arm, celebrating their friendship and sportsmanship. The referee and trainers pull them apart, and someone pours cold water over them. The fight continues until the end of the third round, with both boxers battered and bloodied. Despite their internal conflict about hurting each other, they both fight to win. As the fight progresses, both boxers land powerful blows on each other, and the crowd roars. The two boxers show their different styles, with Antonio being the better boxer and Felix being the more powerful slugger. The day of the match arrives, and the crowd is excited as they enter the ring. They agree to make a promise to each other that during the fight, they will be like strangers. However, when they are pitted against each other in a boxing championship, their friendship is put to the test.īefore the match, Felix suggests that they should split up and not see each other until after the fight to avoid any unnecessary tension. Despite being fierce competitors, they have been best friends since childhood, sharing everything, including their dream. "Amigo Brothers" is a short story by Piri Thomas about the deep friendship between two boxers, Antonio and Felix, who share the same dream of becoming the world lightweight boxing champion.
